We are currently looking for a Director of Planning for our Education, Science & Advanced Technologies (ESAT) practice. The position will be responsible for leading the firm's architecture planning disciplines for diverse technical building types in science, academics, research, and advanced technologies.

Our team is focused on planning and designing exciting spaces that inspire students to learn, researchers to discover and curiosity to thrive. The successful candidate will work together with planners, architects, engineers and other design professionals as part of a collaborative interdisciplinary team. We are an expertise-driven practice that balances deep technical knowledge with the highest degree of creativity.

We design facilities to support life-changing scientific advances and foster discovery. We believe that at the root of all good design is an understanding of human behavior, and how the physical environment can affect these behaviors. We create sustainable facilities in which world-class scientists can discover cures for insidious diseases, create new sources of clean energy, protect our resources and improve public health-enriching people's lives around the world. Similarly, HDR is leading the transformation of learning environments at the world's top academic institutions to better prepare the next generation's leaders.

Project types include learning / teaching environments and research and development facilities for academic, institutional, government, and corporate sector clients. Projects may include a variety of teaching, research, imaging, metrology, testing, and pre-production facilities in the areas of life sciences, physical sciences, biocontainment, animal research, public health, critical facilities / data centers, and related support facilities. Project opportunities are largely within the region, but may extend to neighboring states and potentially abroad due to personal relationships, particular expertise, project needs, etc.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leadership and Management of thriving global planning team
  • Lead a planning team of 18-25 senior architectural planning professionals, who are distributed in offices across the US.
  • Build, support and mentor team of planners through recruitment and training of staff in support of global architectural practice.
  • Seek new improved processes and methods for delivering integrated planning services.
  • Generate new intellectual content for best practices and planning solutions.
  • Project Work
    • Serve clients and provide planning expertise on projects.
    • Coordinate project workload for all Planners.
    • Provide thought leadership and subject matter expert to support HDR projects across the firm.
    • Marketing and Firm Promotion
      • Help develop marketing materials highlighting HDR's planning strengths.
      • Actively represent HDR's planning capabilities across the firm's organization.
      • Promote firm's planning capabilities in the community, region and national market.
      • Serve as national thought leader for HDR planning.
