Job Description:

We are looking for a Senior Research Engineer to join our R&D team in Omaha, Nebraska or Chicago, Illinois.As the Senior Research Engineer, reporting to the Sr Principal Research Engineer, you will design, develop and deploy modeling and simulation techniques to drive faster and more robust business decisions. You will lead and conduct research, experiments and data gathering along with developing findings and recommendations involving physical, chemical or food product sciences.------ You will provide data and information to enable business results in partnership with others within Analytical and Applied Science; as well as colleagues within Product Development, Packaging Development, Process Development, Supply Chain and Quality. -What youll do in this role:

  • Develop empirical, first principles models, and simulation for a product, process, and package interaction understanding for internal customers to use as development tools for improving product, package, and processes.
  • Develop and deploy multiphysics modeling-based approaches in accelerating R&D of food, package, and process development.
  • Run non-linear static and dynamic Finite Element Analysis using Abaqus
  • Lead and complete both long- and short-term projects that require an understanding of physical or chemical transformations to solve technical challenges to maximize/improve product/process/package effectiveness and quality.
  • Exercise technical and professional judgment on findings modeling and simulation opportunities and how best to proceed.
  • Valued as an internal resource across all functions and R&D groups in the areas of - structural design, virtual design evaluation, - -
  • Expert in thermophysical properties measurement lab equipment and associated software packages to effectively complete comprehensive analysis.--- Teaches/trains junior-level staff on such re -sources. -
  • Routinely work and interact directly with cross-functional coworkers on issues, opportunities, and chartered projects.--- Collaborate with others to set technical success criteria within areas of responsibility -
  • Communicate findings, insights, and recommendations to the target audience (Director and above). Effectively influence and interact with others to accomplish research goals.
  • Research externally to ensure current understanding of the latest scientific discoveries and identify potential avenues for generating new ideas.--- Share learning with others. -
  • Develop and leverage a plentiful network of external resources in accomplishing set objectives
  • Lead and direct junior-level engineers/scientists on a regular basis.What youll need to be successful:
    • Masters or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Computational Mechanics/Engineering or Physics and strong natural scientific understanding of food processes
    • Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in modeling structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer applications. Rigorous knowledge of Solid Mechanics and Strength of Materials
    • Structural and thermo-structural focus; additional analyses may include electromagnetic, heat transfer, and CFD
    • Demonstrated competence in the use of Multiphysics modeling techniques (e.g., Abaqus, ANSYS, COMSOL, Star CCM+, FLUENT, OpenFOAM etc.)
    • CAD Design/Modeling tools, preferred SOLIDWORKS
    • Experience with rheological, thermal analytical, textural, chemical, and other physical measurement techniques and equipment
    • Demonstrated ability to perform advanced scientific problem solving and effectively communicate results.
    • Programming knowledge and experience with languages (Python, JAVA, C++, MATLAB, HTML, .net)
    • Experience with calibration, verification, and validation of models through physical testing
    • Preferred experience in modeling of different classes of materials including polymers, elastomers, soft adhesives, and brittle materials
    • Advanced technical/scientific report writing skills.
    • Strong written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Understanding of food product development, processes, and food safety.
    • Advanced knowledge of statistical and analytical tools and fundamentals.
    • Ability to work cross-functionally with others in a team environment.Physical Requirements:
      • Standing for up to 8 hours a day.
      • Use of laboratory equipment - ovens, balances, furnaces, blenders, centrifuges, spectroscopy and chromatography instrumentation, wet chemistry.
      • Ability to lift to 40 pounds.
      • Pushing/pulling laboratory carts.
      • Work in and around cramped/confined spaces
      • Climb with stairs or ladders
      • Exposure to manufacturing environments for periodic extended work days to include: loud noise, excessive heat, cold, wet, slippery conditions and allergens
      • Use tools, equipment, and machinery
      • Drive a company or rental vehicle for up to 6 hours as needed
      • May travel up to 10% of time. Must be able to travel independently and as a responsible Conagra representative.
