Description: The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is
seeking a dedicated and hardworking team player to join us in our

be promoted to a Construction Technician II position at a rate of
$22.938 per hour upon acquiring the necessary certifications and

classification, those who hold a CDL and are utilized to perform
CDL functions on a regular basis shall receive a pay differential
of: $1/hour after 1 year of continuous service, an additional

questions or to learn more. Job Duties: Testing work includes: •
Perform or assist with standard tests on Portland cement concrete,
asphaltic concrete, soil, aggregate, and other construction
material for conformance to specifications, and maintains automated
records. • Perform tests such as slump tests, entrained air content
tests, and unit weight tests on Portland cement concrete. • Perform
soil tests using a nuclear gauge to measure density and moisture
content, using balloon volume measures, scales, and heating devices
to calculate the density and moisture content of soil. Inspection
work includes: • Inspect contractors' work on construction projects
including checking grades and elevations, and collecting, recording
measurements, and maintaining automated records. • Observe
transportable and stationary scales to weigh contractors' trucks
containing materials used in highway construction such as concrete,
hay for mulch, asphalt, and gravel. • Inspect earthwork and removal
operations. • Read construction plans to understand the dimensions
and information shown and apply the information to the inspection
of projects. Survey work includes: • Participate on a highway
construction survey crew responsible for utilizing construction
plans, blue top data, and cross-section data to stake locations at
highway construction sites. • Reduce survey notes and plots
cross-sections. • Measures elevations using a survey rod and level,
measures long distances using a measuring chain and measures short
distances using a tape measure or electronic measuring equipment. •
Make standard computations, operate transit, total station, and/or
level. • Cuts and clears tree brush to clear a line of site to
complete surveying. Measure and set benchmarks for elevation. •
Participate on a preliminary survey crew to collect data from the
field for use in the design of highway plans. • Record field notes
in logbooks. • Complete routine and general maintenance of
equipment. • Load and unload materials, equipment, and supplies. •
Operate snow removal equipment to assist State Maintenance. •
Effective communication skills are required to perform the
essential functions of the job. • Regular and reliable attendance
is also required. • Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements
/ Qualifications Minimum Qualifications : Highway Construction
Technician I : Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have
a valid driver's license. Highway Construction Technician II :
Experience in performing activities pertinent to construction work
such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections. OR
Coursework or training in construction surveying, materials
testing, or inspections practices, and in using associated
instruments and equipment. Also, applicants must be at least 18
years of age and have a valid driver's license. Preferred
Qualifications: Experience in surveying, road construction,
materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry, and geometry.
Experience in the operation of heavy equipment or snow removal
equipment. Computer experience including word processing,
spreadsheets, SiteManager, GEOPAK, and MicroStation software.
Other: Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within
90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program. Costs to
obtain the permit will be paid for by the department. This position
may require overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance is
required. In order to be hired at the Highway Construction
Technician II level, applicants must have passed the NDOT Math,
Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan reading courses or have an
Associate’s degree in civil engineering technology or a related
field which may be substituted for the completion of the NDOT
courses. Upon hire, you will be provided with the required training
material. This is a self-paced training and once completed provides
for promotion to the Highway Construction Tech II level. Typically,
this is accomplished within the first 6 months of employment. Must
be able to report to work outside scheduled work hours for snow and
other highway emergencies. Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge of: standards and specifications used for various types
of projects; instruments, equipment, and material used in
surveying, testing, and inspection work; all phases of construction
and plant inspection and their relationship to each other;
surveying and testing techniques. Skill in: calculating
mathematical computations involving trigonometry and geometry;
applying complex construction inspection, surveying, and materials
testing techniques; using personal computers/laptops and associated
applications software including drafting, spreadsheet, and word
processing software; using technical engineering equipment and
instruments used during assigned projects. Ability to: interact
with coworkers, contractors, consultants, and the public to
maintain cooperative work relationships; prepare technical reports
and maintain detailed records; maintain surveying, testing, and
inspection instruments and equipment; lift equipment and samples
weighing up to 100 pounds; communicate with others in person, and
by telephone, radio, and email; interpret and apply engineering
plans and specifications; plan, schedule, and lead the work of
coworkers during assigned projects; apply construction procedures
in agency construction manuals and directives. Ability to work and
communicate with a team. Ability to work with minimal supervision,
be self-motivated, and hold high integrity. Trainable. Ability and
willingness to learn and accept challenges by learning and
adjusting to new technology and processes. Quality/results-oriented
sense of urgency in the performance of duties. Ability to work
safely and demonstrate safe and reliable practices and behaviors.
