Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Acute Care / Physician Assistant

Job Description:

Just like the patients we serve, Children's is growing and hiring a Nurse Practitioner Acute Care or Physician Assistant to provide healthcare services within the specialty area by establishing collaborative, consultative, and referral networks as appropriate with other healthcare professionals. The NP practice includes health promotion, health supervision, illness prevention and diagnosis, treatment, and management of common health problems and acute or chronic conditions.

Essential Functions/Competencies


% of Time 40% In collaboration with physicians and other members of the health care team, assesses patient, synthesizes and analyzes data, orders diagnostic tests and therapeutic treatments, and evaluates clinical outcomes. Comprehensive care of the patient includes assessment, diagnosis, development of a treatment plan and implementation of an individualized plan of care.


  • Completes an accurate assessment (history and physical examination) of the pediatric patient
  • Synthesizes and analyzes data obtained through assessment to develop a comprehensive plan of care that is individualized and reflects patient care needs and includes interventions and treatments to attain expected outcomes using evidence based medicine concepts
  • Implements plan with appropriate treatment orders
  • Evaluates and revises plan as indicated by changes in patient condition or needs
  • Communicates medical plan to caregivers, staff members, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Demonstrates proper use of laboratory and x-ray to assist in diagnosis and interprets results correctly
  • Demonstrates understanding of caregiver dynamics involved in the ill pediatric patient
  • Meets the development and psychosocial needs of the pediatric patient/caregiver
  • Assesses the educational needs of patients/caregivers and develops/implements the educational plan in collaboration with other healthcare professionals
    25% Prescribes therapeutic measures and medications according to the State of Nebraska APRN-Nurse Practitioner statutes. Performs select invasive procedures, as approved in his/her individualized Scope of Service, according to the Children's Hospital & Medical Center credentialing policy.

    --- Demonstrates competency in principles of medication dosing and mechanism of action as it relates to specific dagnoses

    --- Orders and/or administers medication according to Children's Hospital & Medical Center policy, procedure, and scope of practice

    --- Maintains accurate log of credentialed procedures performed. Demonstrates knowledge and expertise when performing credentialed procedures/specialty skills, independently or with another healthcare provider to include:




    CREDENTIALED PROCEDURES Arterial catheter placement Arterial puncture Lumbar Puncture Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) placement Lumbar Puncture Moderate Sedation


    20% Assumes leadership role to establish and monitor standards of practice to improve patient care including recommending ways to improve clinical practice, participation in related educational activities, utilizes and/or participates in research, participation in professional organizations and performance improvement teams, and incorporation of new clinical information into practice.


    • Serves as a role model for staff by facilitating, supporting, mentoring, taking initiative, and practicing proactive problem solving
    • Serves as a reliable and visible resource for staff
    • Conducts or utilizes research and new clinical information to recommend ways to improve clinical practice
    • Participates in educational activities and networking related to practice
    • Seeks experiences and learning opportunities related to practice
    • Participates in professional organizations
    • Serves on Performance Improvement teams as needed
    • Assures that clinical practice meets national standards of pediatric healthcare
    • Coordinates project or program development and effective implementation
      10% Uses sound medical/clinical judgment during care for the pediatric patient including consultation/collaboration with hospitalist physicians and other healthcare providers, use of clinical guidelines, and documentation of assessment, interventions, and patient response to treatment. Documentation reflects assessment/evaluation, modification, and patient's response to treatments, changes in condition, and interventions/procedures.       KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


      • Satisfy all relevant criteria and qualifications outlined in the Medical Staff Policy on Allied Health Professional, required to be credentialed.
      • Maintains practice agreement with service of specialty, and practices within framework of respective scope of practice.
      • Must be knowledgeable in billing regulation practices to include documentation requirements/CPT coding regulations.
      • Knowledge of physical, mental, developmental, emotional and social needs of the neonate, infant, toddler, pre-school, school age and adolescent patients
      • Maintains current knowledge and skill level in field through reading appropriate journals, networking, and attendance at conferences or seminars.
      • Must be able to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature, without loss of efficiency or composure, and be able to perform under stressful conditions when confronted with multiple requests, demonstrating prioritizing skills.
      • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with multiple disciplines.
      • Ability to be self-directed, with minimum supervision, and detail oriented.




        EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


        • Education as required by Department of Health and Human Services-Regulation and Licensure Credentialing Division as represented by APRN licensure in the State of Nebraska.
        • Previous Advanced Practice Provider experience in pediatrics/neonatal preferred.


          CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:




          • Current and valid unrestricted Nebraska state licensure (e.g., APRN, PA, RN,) required
          • Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association is required.
          • Current and valid Pediatric Advanced Life support (PALS) required, within 6 months of hire.
          • Maintain active Federal DEA license required.
          • Current and valid nationally recognized APP board certification required
          • Current and valid nationally recognized nurse practitioner acute care certification is required, within 2 years of hire.


            SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:




            • Satisfy all relevant criteria and qualifications outlined in the Medical Staff Policy on Allied Health Professional, required to be credentialed.
            • Current CHMC APP's that are applying for a role that requires PNP-AC certification will have 2 years from date of transfer to complete the PNP-AC certification in terms for continued employment. (E.g., PNP-PC, PNP-AC, etc.)
