Senior EHS Engineer

Job Description:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function.

Develop, implement, and monitor the company’s EHS compliance and management systems in accordance with governmental and company requirements to ensure compliance, injury prevention, and risk mitigation.

Provide hands-on technical support for engineering and operations teams across the organization in implementing and managing EHS policies and programs.

Partner with plant and distribution facility leaders to continuously improve the safety, culture, awareness, and accountability in support of EHS policies and programs.

Work collaboratively with manufacturing/operations staff and EHS team members on existing and new programs and projects, including environmental compliance.

Work along-side internal and external engineers, manufacturing/operations staff, OEMs, and third-party contractors in evaluating equipment hazards and controls, designing and implementing of new or modified equipment, and management of change processes.

Conduct EHS risk assessments of manufacturing to identify and mitigate occupational and environmental hazards. Determine and implement identified corrective and preventative actions and opportunities for improvement.

Complete EHS compliance reports and analyze EHS data and report trends, recommending plans for correction of gaps and provide EHS input to address change.

Support manufacturing and distribution facilities during agency and external customer inspections/audits, including but not limited to EPA, OSHA, fire department, and county agencies, and external customer audits.

Provide technical assistance and guidance to plant and distribution facilities by leading or assisting in safety committee teams and meetings, including EHS regulatory interpretations.

Assist facility management with identifying and implementing cost saving opportunities (e.g., reduce energy consumption, pollution prevention activities).

Implement on-going industrial hygiene chemical and noise assessments and monitoring plans; implement ergonomic programs to reduce risk of cumulative trauma and other ergonomic injuries at the manufacturing and distribution facilities.

Maintain an open and candid working relationship with immediate supervisor/manager in discussing matters of importance.

Understand and apply lean manufacturing tools and methodology to lead continuous improvement activities.

Adhere to established company values, practices, policies and procedures at all times. Follow and support compliance with all applicable safety rules, laws, regulations, and standards.

Demonstrate regular and punctual attendance at the assigned work location. May be required to work irregular shifts and be on call. To perform job related duties, nationwide travel by automobile and airplane may be required up to 33% of the time. In case of an emergency, travel could be required without notice.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities

An individual qualified for this job must be able to:

Wear both an EHS and a business hat to build a solid reputation as a collaborative, practical, leader capable of moving the needle to create a safe and healthy workplace while helping operations meet production demands.

Collaboratively and effectively provide technical support to internal and external engineers and manufacturing/operations staff necessary to evaluate equipment hazards and controls, the design and implementation of new or modified equipment, and management of change processes.

Demonstrate a strong knowledge of EHS (state and federal) regulatory programs, rules, codes, guidelines, and agencies and an experience with ergonomics assessments of physical capabilities, needs and limitations in manufacturing and distribution facilities.

Work collaboratively with plant staff to design solutions in compliance with governmental and company requirements and help drive the business forward.

Communicate effectively in written and oral forms to all levels of associates from shop floor to senior management, as well to external customers and agencies; present ideas well one on one, in small groups, and to larger audiences; convey the meaning and importance of EHS topics to non-EHS personnel.

Demonstrate excellent organization and project management skills, with the ability to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Lead and motivate team members; spark and direct conversation during meetings that builds team collaboration and overall effectiveness.

Find innovative and practical solutions to unsafe working conditions and environmental concerns.

Make decisions based on combination of analysis, experience, and professional judgment.

Operate a computer—PC proficiency; use Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and risk management information systems.

Recognize problems when they occur and to work collaboratively across functions toward a practical solution that is in compliance with the law and drives the business forward.

Pay attention to details and pursue quality in accomplishing work duties and tasks. Look for opportunities to reduce costs or increase productivity without reducing effectiveness.

Independently take advantage of opportunities to improve or increase skills, abilities and job knowledge.

Make sure that work is delivered on time and of high quality.

Minimum Experience, Education, and Certifications

An individual qualified for this job must have and maintain the following qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or higher engineering, safety, or related technical field from an accredited institution.

Seven (7) or more years of experience working in a technical Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) role in a manufacturing facility.

Have and be able to maintain a valid drivers’ license and good driving record.

OSHA, RCRA, HAZWOPER, and DOT training preferred.

Physical Demands OF Essential Functions

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the Essential Functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions .

This position will require the individual to remain seated for long periods of time and have the manual dexterity to operate standard office equipment such as computer keyboard, mouse, calculator, phone, copier/scanner, and similar machines.

While conducting training, performing audits and assessments, and interacting with associates, the individual must be able to move about the warehouse and plant facility, access high and low shelves, and transport products weighing up to 65 pounds, with assistance of motorized equipment as needed. The individual must also be able to communicate effectively in a busy and often noisy warehouse and manufacturing environment.

Able to walk inside, outside and throughout manufacturing and distribution facilities, including stairs, concrete and uneven ground.

Environmental Conditions

The environmental conditions described here are representative of those the associate encounters while performing the Essential Functions of the job.

This position will require the individual to remain seated for long periods of time and have the manual dexterity to operate standard office equipment such as computer keyboard, mouse, calculator, phone, copier/scanner, and similar machines.

While conducting training, performing audits and assessments, and interacting with associates, the individual will also be expected to work in manufacturing and warehouse environments, which may include being exposed to work in high, precarious places, outdoor weather conditions, dust, and extreme heat or cold. Noise levels are loud.

Individual may be expected to travel to and work at the company’s various locations throughout the United States up to 33% of the time.
