A Brief Summary of This PositionThis is an individual contributor that operates the Mid-Size Trap Shear to cut trapezoids out of steel coil. Programs and operates PLC controlled trapezoid shearing machine and moves traps to stacks in front of the brake press. Monitors the quality of incoming steel and determines when material is substandard. Uses hand banding equipment, tape measures, and micrometers. Performs calibration and setup of both pieces of equipment for changes of coil or thickness.Essential Functions:

• Perform basic programming and setup of PLC controlled machinery, troubleshooting operating malfunctions, and be well versed in operator's maintenance of the equipment
• Read and interpret blue prints, flat sheets, and routings in order to cut parts correctly Complete shop mathematics including conversion of decimals to fractions
• Operate overhead cranes from the bridge or shop floor using a remote
• Understand the properties of steel in order to control the shape of sheetsImportant Details:

  • This position reports to shop's Production Supervisor
  • Floor operated bridge crane with suction spreader bar for moving traps
  • Blastec to shot blast sheets as they convey to the Trap Shear
  • Trap Shear taking sheets and cutting to trapezoids
  • Forklift to empty and/or add shot to Blastec and to remove full dust barrels
  • Grinder to remove burs from sheets due to poor edge quality
  • Precision measuring instruments to check incoming material and to verify that finished product meets specifications
  • Actively participate in department LEAN activities, and demonstrated performance working in a team environment
  • Demonstrate a commitment to Safety through excellent safety practices and behaviors and conform to all Valmont safety policies and proceduresRequired Qualifications:
    • High school diploma
    • Three (3) to five (5) years of relevant experience
    • Ability to read and decipher blueprints and flat sheets without assistance and use them to properly shear scheduled work
    • Ability to make mathematical calculations in preparing product or setting up the machinery
    • The ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds with up to 20 pounds as the most frequent lift
    • The ability to physically perform the requirements of the tasks assigned
    • Must possess acceptable work history and attendance recordHighly Qualified:
      • One (1) year of previous experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment
      • Ability to operate overhead cranes from the bridge or shop floor using remote
      • Minimum one (1) year working with complex PLC controlled, mechanical shearing or similar equipment
      • Knowledge of basic programming and set-up of PLC controlled machinery
      • The ability to communicate and interact with coworkers in a professional manner
      • Close attention to detail and follow work instructions
